Understanding Depression Insomnia
Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or to follow the correct sleep pattern when you do go to sleep. Normally a person reaches the “REM” or dream stage of sleep slowly, which allows their body and mind to rest and regroup while reaching this stage. A person with insomnia that does fall asleep reaches this stage immediately which is not healthy for them. Not getting a good night sleep can cause a series of problems. So what causes insomnia depression? Recent studies have shown that sleep deprivation and depression is caused by a person suffering from insomnia and not getting the proper rest they need to stay healthy physically and mentally.
People with insomnia either can not fall asleep or they go to sleep only to wake up all through the night. When it is time to get up they are just as tired and worn out as they were when they first laid down. Their body and mind does not have time to recuperate for the new day. After a period of time they become depressed and these symptoms can make it even harder to fall asleep. Eighty percent of the people that have depression also have insomnia. In the past it was always thought that depression was the cause of insomnia, but these new studies show that it may be the other way around. Insomnia can lead to depression which is where the term sleep deprivation and depression has derived.
It is hard for a person with insomnia to function normally everyday. It can make then feel exhausted and irritable. Sometimes simple everyday task become an overwhelming burden for these people. Then when you add in the sleep deprivation and depression they really do begin to suffer through each day. Something as simple as deciding what to eat for lunch could make a person with sleep deprivation and depression become upset and feel stressed out.
A person that has sleep deprivation and depression can still have a loving family, a career and accomplish most anything they set out to do as long as the get treatment for this condition. Doctors now have a much better understanding of the link between insomnia and depression making it easier to treat patients with this condition. Both conditions need to be treated at the same time. Once a person begins getting the proper amount of good sleep the depression may completely go away eventually.
