Food Allergies In Kids And Recognizing The Symptoms

September 14, 2008 By: blogger Category: Allergies No Comments →

Food Allergies in Kids

Food allergies are a common problem in kids. Nearly two million children have food allergies in the United States. Some food allergies are life threatening, even if the food is taken in very little quantity. Peanut tops the list of notorious foods which cause allergies. Following it are milk, especially cows milk, soy, eggs, wheat, seafood and other nuts.

Food allergies are caused when the immune system is confused. The job of the immune system is to protect the body from diseases, bacteria, viruses and germs. The antibodies produced by the immune system helps to fight these minute external organisms which makes the person sick. But if the body is allergic to certain food, the immune system mistakes the food to a harmful foreign substance and takes action towards it thinking that it is dangerous to the body. The body acts adversely, when it isnt supposed to do so.

When the immune system detects allergic substance, the antibodies produce mast cells. They are a kind of immune system cell which release a chemicals, such as histamine, in the bloodstream. These chemicals affect the respiratory system, digestive system, nose, eyes, throat, and skin. Initial symptoms are runny nose, tingling sensation in the lips or tongue, and itchy skin rash like hives. The reaction can be mild to severe and depends on every individual. The symptoms can appear right after the food is consumed or after few hours. Other symptoms are cough, wheezing, nausea, hoarse voice, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, and throat tightness.

A sudden and harsh allergic reaction is known as anaphylaxis. The patient encounters many problems, all at once which involve blood vessels, the heart, digestion, breathing, and skin. The blood pressure drops very steeply, the tongue swells and there is swelling in the breathing tubes. Patients who have such allergic reactions should be ready to handle emergencies. They should always carry some type of medicine which will help to combat or reduce the adverse affect of the food.

Most of the times, it is very easy to detect the cause of food allergy. Problems such as hives begin to surface as soon as the child eats the substance he is allergic to. At other times, it becomes very difficult to determine the cause of allergy. In such cases, everything should be observed under close surveillance. Food items which are made out of many ingredients should be thoroughly checked for the allergic cause. Most of the times, allergies are inherited from other family members or other kids born with food allergies. Changes in the surroundings and the body play a major role in these kinds of cases. Some of the kids arent actually allergic to the food and show only mild reaction. Like people who are lactose intolerant suffer from diarrhea and belly pain after consuming milk and diary products. This is not an indication that the child is allergic to milk. This reaction happens because their body is incapable of breaking down the sugars which are found in diary products and milk.

If the conditions are severe, a doctor should be consulted immediately. If food allergy is diagnosed, the doctor refers to an allergy specialist. The doctor asks questions like eating patterns, past allergic reactions and the time period between the consumption of food and the surfacing of the symptoms. The specialist can also ask about allergy related conditions like asthma or eczema and whether allergic reactions are hereditary. Usually skin test and blood test is done to test the antibodies and the reaction they have on the skin when it is exposed to the allergic substance.

Kids who are allergic to egg and milk outgrow them as the age progresses. But allergies which are severe and are related to items such as peanut, shrimps, and some kind of fish, last for a lifetime. Other than food, children can be allergic to certain medicines and flower pollen. The best way to avoid allergies is to avoid the cause of it. No specific medicine has been developed for the cure of allergies.

Tips for Allergy Sufferers

May 29, 2008 By: blogger Category: Allergies No Comments →

There is nothing that will ruin your day like allergic reactions. As a longtime allergy sufferer I should know. The discomfort is rather difficult to describe. For me, my allergic reactions are mostly caused by pollen in the air. I’ll be walking down the street feeling just fine and all of the sudden I’ll get an allergy attack. My nose will get stuffy and itchy, my eyes will get watery, and I’ll suddenly have difficulty breathing. Sometimes my allergic reactions are more subtle than that. Occasionally, I’ll wake up already fully congested and just absolutely miserable. As the day goes by, my throat will continue to itch and the more time I spend outside the worse things get until the allergic reactions are just too overwhelming and I have to lie down.

My allergic reactions may seem unusually strong and I generally have to undergo more treatments than most sufferers. Many people only need to use antihistamines to treat symptoms, but for me it’s not that simple. Not only do I have to use an antihistamine but I have to use two types. I also have to use a decongestant. On top of all that, as if that were not enough already, I have to get shots for my allergies. These shots make my arms swell for hours some time, in which case I get adrenaline shots to make the allergies calm down. Let’s face it; I’m a wreck.

What I’ve been doing recently has helped make my allergies not as severe as it was before. I have been finally following my doctor’s tips. First of all, I have been regularly cleaning out my house, making sure dust and mold has no place to hide out. At first, this stirred up allergic reactions, but eventually they subsided once the junk was out of the air. Besides this, I have been eating right. This means cutting out fatty food, and all things caffeinated or processed. Also, allergic reactions can be decreased according to some experts, by eating more vegetables and simple whole grains. All of this has done fabulous things towards making me feel healthier than ever, and that is the most important thing!

Everyone loves to eat food and add the favorite seasonings or spices to the delicacies. Adding some pepper, salt, garlic, basil or any other seasoning always helps to enhance the taste, which is why food is so good. A Guide To Purchasing An Air Purifier

March 17, 2008 By: blogger Category: Allergies No Comments →

Air purifiers have become rather popular today as a way to help people with allergies control their indoor environments, and to filter both indoor and outdoor pollution. The proper air purifiers can make your indoor home or office environment healthier, but there are several types of air purifiers, and you need to know the difference when you plan to purchase one. The following buying guide will help you make the right choice when searching for an air purifier.

Types of Air Purifiers

There are essentially three technologies that purify air: HEPA filters that hold the smallest of air particles; Ionization which cleanse air by emitting a certain percentage of ozone, and electrostatic air purification which utilises charged plates that have positive and negative polarity. Air purifiers can use a combination of HEPA filters, with a pre-filter that begins trapping particles even before they get to the HEPA filer. Ionic purifiers have been discouraged by some sources because the ozone emissions may affect people with allergies and asthma, something an air purifier is meant to avoid.

Within these three types of purifiers, there are subtle divergences among models and different sizes and features. Air purifiers can be small, designed to sit on a desk in an office, or be quite of large stand-up models for purifying air in a large room or rooms.

Air purifiers differ in the amount of allergens and other air impurities that are removed from the air. Many boast that they remove from 98% to 100% of impurities, while others remove around 80% to 85%. Some air purifiers are filter free, while others work with filters that trap the pollutants within the filter. Some air purifiers do their task with a fair amount of noise, while others boast a quiet system of purification. Some air purifiers eradicate a host of pollutants including allergens, viruses, bacteria and odors, but don’t eliminate chemical pollutants. Others cover all types of pollutants.

Price

Good air purifiers might be relatively expensive, depending on size and features. Air filters start at about $60 for a simple, relatively small table top air purifier, and go up to $700 for large floor models. The price will also vary based on the technology used to purify the air, and the percentage and type of particulates that are ultimately trapped by the technology. You can view a full line of air purifiers at www.wize.com/airpurifiers.

Designs

Air purifiers vary greatly in design. There are air purifiers made of different materials, colors, shapes and sizes. There are stand-up and portable models. If you will purchase a rather large standing model that will have the ability to cover a large area, you will want to choose a model that is not only safe and effective, but that will mix in with your room environment. Visit www.wize.com/airpurifiers to view all of the various models and designs.

Ratings

It is very important to check ratings and reviews of air purifiers because each model has a different technology for removing pollutants, and some air purifiers are more efficient at removing more pollutants. The powerful consumer resource, www.wize.com/airpurifiers , will give you an overall rating on each air purifier model that is based on numerous individual reviews. You can also read the unique reviews behind the score.

Technical Specifications

Technical specifications will vary greatly among air purifiers. Technical specifications for a mid-priced ($200) standing air purifier may feature maintenance free – with no filters, no fan speeds, and no controls. It will cover a room size of 450-650 square feet. A $400 model may have an internal ionizer, HEPA carbon filter that will last 6 months; a low noise level; four fan speeds; manual control knobs, and work in a room up to 365 square feet.

Where to Shop

It may be a challenge to find a large selection of air filters in stores. Some specialized stores, such as the Sharper Image, may have a selection, along with bigger department stores. It is most efficient to shop online to see the complete line of air filters available, and understand the different features. You can also comparison shop online to get the best buy.

5 Asthma Prevention Tips Which Could Be Life Savers!

July 17, 2007 By: blogger Category: Allergies No Comments →

Winning the asthma fight starts with prevention and recognizing the causes and triggers of asthma is a great start.

Astma prevention is easier said than done though and the main problem is a lot of the triggers we need to avoid are the exact same ones we come into contact with everyday. In other words, avoiding them on occasions is nearly impossible.

Triggers such as animal fur, pollens, dust mites, chemicals, general pollution and even food, yes food, are things we come into contact everyday not because we want to but because they are part and parcel of modern day living.

So what can you do? Do you build yourself a nuclear style shelter and simply hide away from society. That thought sometimes is appealing for some strange reason but the best plan of attack for asthma prevention is just to be aware and not become complacent.

5 Asthma Prevention Tips

1.Dust mites are a “bug bear” of human existence but avoiding them from an early age can get your asthma prevention plan off to a solid start. Researches have shown that eliminating these factors, which cause the allergic inflammation at the first place, can help reduce coughs and other dust-related health problems as well.

Simple home maintenance such as regular cleaning will help while proper ventilation and maintaining a suitable temperature within the home can also helpful.

2. While cats and dogs are part and parcel of family life sometimes tough decisions such as not having them need to be made. It’s personal choice however, but it depends on how serious you are about asthma prevention.

Moulds, tobacco, or cigarette smoke are other asthma triggers which should be avoided. Smoke is another big factor which brings about asthma due to the contents of the tobacco smoke which can cause inflammation in the lungs and other respiratory parts such as the bronchus.

3. Chemical use should be regulated. For instance, chemicals such as benzyl benzoate, phenyl salicylate, common household disinfectants and other insect growth regulators may help to fight the good fight against dust mites and other pests but when used out of control and exposed to air too long they can trigger asthma too.

4. Sometimes external preventative measures are hit and miss but internal measures can be controlled from a young age. A child, from birth, should be given sufficient breast milk and other nutritious food such as Omega-3 fatty acids, and oily fishes for asthma prevention as well.

5. This could be asking the impossible because working to make ends meet is a necessity today but work areas likely to contain wood dust, perfumes, chemicals, smoke, gases… the list could go on and on, are unsuitable environments for asthma sufferers.

Despite this, measures can be taken such as wearing a mask if triggers exist and working in a properly ventilated area can cut down the incidence of attack.
