12 step recovery is an internet based 12 step community that offers free membership and welcomes members from various 12 step fellowships. This fellowship is designed to offer a place for people of like mind to meet from all over the world. The goal to a good community is to have members participate and become active in the community.
The number of members in 12 step programs is unknown. Although fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous and N.A. have active Board of Directors and attempt to keep track of their numbers and growth for the community, it is impossible to truly count. This service is imperative to one’s recovery. The service committees are tasked with not only writing literature for their fellowship but also with updating the literature that has been written to stay with the current times.
The Alcoholics Anonymous book is blue in color and referred to by most as the Big Book. This AA Big Book contains an overview of the 12 steps and 12 traditions and stories from recovering alcoholics. The Big Book has information for the alcoholic and their loved ones. The spiritual foundation of the program is outlined in this book as well as information for those who are agnostic.
The Narcotics Anonymous book is navy blue in color and is referred to as the Basic Text. The NA Basic Text contains an overview of the narcotic anonymous 12 steps. The main difference between the AA and NA 12 steps is the first step. In Narcotics Anonymous the first step addresses addiction. Narcotics Anonymous believes addiction encompasses both drugs and alcohol.
The 12 step program of aa and the 12 step program of na are suggestions only. The members follow these suggestions and as a result experience abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The magic of the 12 steps is referred to as a spiritual experience. Members who follow all 12 steps have a spiritual awakening.
