Three Reasons To Exercise for Baby Boomers

October 31, 2007 By: blogger Category: Modern Fitness General 1 Comment →

As I age the benefits of exercise become more and more obvious. Perhaps you have noticed that once you hit the mid-40s it becomes impossible to eat the same way you ate at 20 and still maintain a healthy weight. I began to fight weight gain as soon as I turned 46.

It’s amazing how much regular exercise help. Dieting alone does not keep my weight down. I have to combine dieting with daily exercise or the pounds keep increasing.

Here are three benefits of exercise that are especially important for baby boomers.

The first is to maintain a healthy weight. Did you know that even carrying around an extra ten pounds can hurt your overall health? It leaves you more open to cancer and heart disease.

The second benefit of exercise is for your heart’s health. It lowers your cholesterol, strengthens your heart, and lowers your risk of heart attack.

The third benefit of exercise is it improves your outlook on life. If you have trouble with depression, regular exercise, (especially walking) can help you overcome it.

These are just three benefits of exercise. It’s so easy to just go outside and walk for half an hour a day or sit and peddle a stationary bike while watching a half hour sitcom, as long as your doctor gives you the okay, there are no reasons not to spend a half an hour a day promoting your good health.

Just About Asthma Treatment and More

October 28, 2007 By: blogger Category: Allergies 2 Comments →

Asthma Childhood
About 22 million men, women and children around the US suffer from a chronic condition called asthma. Childhood onset asthma is found in about 10 to 12 percent of America’s children. Asthma is more common in those under the age of 40 but can occur at any age. Those who have a family history of asthma will be more likely to develop the illness than those who do not.

Asthma is sometimes referred to as bronchial asthma. This is because asthma is a chronic respiratory ailment that affects the bronchial airways. When a person is having an asthma attack, the bronchial airways will inflame or constrict to prevent much air from getting into the lungs. This results in breathing problems. There are more that a million emergency room visits because of asthma symptoms every year.

There are many symptoms of asthma, which can limit many activities such as running, playing sports or other types of exercising. Some triggers of asthma may include allergens, smoke, environmental hazards and other things in our daily lives including some foods. A person may feel fine when not having attacks but can still have some symptoms. Especially after exercising, a person may feel out of breath.

There is no known cause for asthma. What is known about asthma is that it is a recurring inflammatory disease of the airways. The triggers of asthmatic symptoms can be different from person to person. When the airways become constricted, they also become filled with mucus, which contribute to the airways narrowness. This makes breathing even more difficult. The excess mucus can also cause irritation in the airways.

Not everyone who has asthma will have the same symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms may not occur all at the same time. You may even experience different symptoms than the common ones listed below. The symptoms can be mild during one attack and then severe the next. The most common symptoms of are wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, pain, pressure and tightness in the chest.

There are some early warning signs that occur before an asthma attack. These signs will begin before the common symptoms of an asthma attack. These signs can also tell you that your asthma is worsening. The signs are not severe enough to make you discontinue your normal day to day activities but if you recognize these signs, you may be able to prevent your next attack.

The early warning signs are feeling tired or moody, decreased lung function, wheezing, couching (especially at night), signs of a cold or allergies (runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, headache and sore throat), problems sleeping and possible feeling of weakness. If you are experiencing these early warning signs, you should take your fast acting asthma medication as directed.

Eye Lift Surgery - Get Rid Of The Bags Under Your Eyes!

October 28, 2007 By: blogger Category: Eyes Vision No Comments →

If you have noticed sagging skin and bags around your eyes then there is a good chance other people have noticed as well.

The solution could be eye lift surgery and as far as the plastic surgery procedure stakes is concerned, it’s one of the most popular.

One of the first considerations you need to be making if the question of eye lift surgery has cropped up is whether it’s worth jeopardizing your finances for. It’s a popular procedure yes, but it is also considered a somewhat extravagant procedure by many.

In reality though, the procedure has many great benefits and apart from giving a person back somewhat of a refreshing appearance, it can improve the symmetrical proportion of a person’s face and in many cases, can improve the visual aspect especially if sagging skin is hampering a person’s vision.

How Much Does It Cost?

Getting a quote can be a little misleading if you simply phone the doctor’s practice and get a quote over the phone.

Why?

Unit pricing basically means there are a number of individual pieces to the overall puzzle and the total cost can only be guaged by adding all the individual costs.

Here are some examples:

- hospital or surgeon’s facilities
- equipment fees such as lasers
- additional staff fees including that of the anesthesiologist who can command up to 10 per cent or more of the total cost
- and of course the surgeon’s fee

The surgeon will command between 33-50 per cent of the overall cost which can go as high as $7000 and beyond. Can you afford it? There is no harm in investigating the possibility of eye lift surgery particularly if the appearance around your eyes is in dire need of refreshing.

When discussing the costs of the procedure with your surgeon it may pay to ask about the benefits vs. the risks. Yes, there is some risk, although only slight and it’s par for the course with surgery related matters but if you feel the benefits far outweigh any risks and you feel it’s affordable, then you can consider yourself an eye lift surgery candidate.

Causes of Chronic Heartburn

October 28, 2007 By: blogger Category: Nutrition No Comments →

Millions of people all over the world suffer from a condition called chronic heartburn. It can be so painful that many people dread eating a meal in fear of having heartburn afterwards. A person gets heartburn when the acid that forms in their stomach to aid in digestion travels back up their esophagus and occasionally their windpipe. The foods that you eat can make this condition worse but it is not the necessarily caused by food. The symptoms of chronic heartburn occur most often when you lie down or when you bend over. Sometimes you can be standing or sitting when it happens. Many people are awakened during the night with signs of heartburn and it can cause chest pains and make you feel as if you are choking.

Some of the foods and beverages that can relax the esophageal sphincter muscles and increase your risk of chronic heartburn include tomatoes, chocolate, fatty and fried foods, caffeine, citrus juices and alcohol. Although these and some other foods increase the risk of heartburn there are a number of other things that can contribute as well. For instance, eating and going straight to bed is a bad idea; you should wait at least three or four hours. Skipping meals is not a good idea because this contributes to overeating at your next meal. Overeating causes your stomach to form extra acid to help digest this food and that increases your risk of having chronic heartburn.

Did you know that if you wear tight clothing that you are putting pressure on your stomach and pressing the contents of your stomach towards your esophagus? This is definitely contributing to your condition. If you smoke tobacco this is also making your heartburn worse so it is suggested that you either quit or cut way back. If you are overweight those extra pounds are also putting pressure on your stomach. Start up an exercise plan to lose those extra pounds and you will begin to feel a lot better in more ways than one. At night when you go to bed, try elevating your head to eliminate or reduce waking up during the night with heartburn.

Different things can trigger chronic heartburn in different people, so it is important that you find out and avoid the things that cause your heartburn. If you are having a lot of problems with this condition and the suggestions above do not help, then you need to see your doctor. Leaving chronic heartburn untreated can cause more serious conditions to arise. Don’t let this happen to you, see your doctor and let him help you find ways to get your condition under control and improve your health.

Contact Lens Infection - Why Your Contacts May Be Hurting Your Vision

October 26, 2007 By: blogger Category: Eyes Vision No Comments →

The incidence of contact lens infection is becoming a major concern as more and more people turn to wearing lenses in preference to glasses.

In most countries, you cannot buy lenses without a legal prescription yet the emergence of lenses for purposes other than vision correctness is becoming popular particular among the younger generation.

Unless you’re aware of contact lens infection then you could be unwittingly be putting your vision under threat.

Cause Of Contact Lens Infection

Complications can arise through over use and over wearing along with sloppy hygiene and awkward fit. If you are using contacts for vision correcting purposes then you will have been to your doctor for analysis before getting a prescription to buy them.

One of the worst complications suffered by contact lens wearers is a corneal ulcer. This condition is caused by a microscopic parasite which breeds in water-based conditions and is partial to the cornea.

Those most at risk are regular swimmers, either in pools or natural water pools and those who practice unsatisfactory hygiene methods. A corneal ulcer can be a nasty condition to contract with redness of the area, pain and some discharge the most notable symptoms.

It’s treated with antibiotics although this is not always immediately effective and in many instances, patients made need to spend a stint in hospital.

Other Contact Lens Infections

Another nasty condition known as GPC (Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis) can occur as a reaction to a contact lens. It’s symptoms include mucus and itching and the normal path for a patient to follow when affected by GPC is to simply stop wearing the contacts. Irritations from solution can also occur with many patients. If you suddenly notice a redness to the eye, remove your contacts immediately as this could be due to a bad wearing contact.

Practice Good Hygiene

If you’re concerned about contact lens infection issues then speak with your doctor about it. This article is meant to just make you aware that with contact lenses, while they’re great in enhancing your looks, can also create complications.

Maintaining good levels of hygiene is a great start and never let anyone else touch your contacts or wear them. In fact, avoid any contact with a foreign surface when handling them.

Antiaging Product Supplement - The Truth About Antiaging Products

October 26, 2007 By: blogger Category: Anti Aging, Nutrition No Comments →

If you’re searching for an antiaging product supplement then your choices are endless, if you’ll just take a look around you.

We’re continually bombarded with messages from nutritional supplements to antiaging creams and one of the main problems associated with many who are searching for the fountain of youth is their short attention span.

What do we mean by this? Simply too many people are jumping from one antiaging product supplement to the next. This is caused by lack of patience and as soon as something new pervades the market they’re onto it.

Stick To What Works Best

We’ve always maintained; the best antiaging product supplement available is good old proper nutrition. It’s a matter of feeding your body the correct nutrients in the correct amount and giving it all the ammunition it needs to stave off disease and premature aging.

Combine this with a good and sensible exercise regime and you’ll be amazed at the results. Taking shortcuts to shaving off the years can be achieved if you have a large bank balance and access to a great plastic surgeon but the truth is, most of us simply don’t have these type of resources.

Human Growth Hormone

Many people have looked at the possibility of using HGH. This can be a dangerous practice without the correct supervision and it’s when it’s abused that people get into trouble.

Human growth hormone, helps in maintaining the immune system and youthful muscle power, as well as strength and vigor. Growth hormone levels deplete remarkably with the advancement of age, so in aging men and women, it has sometimes been beneficial in restoring and sustaining some of their youthful aspects.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone, which is produced in the adrenal gland. It is present in the bloodstream and upper levels in brain tissue, and gradually the DHEA reduces in a person resulting in a loss of stamina and in many cases, sexual vitality. Loss of muscle tissue as well as weight gain are other factors in losing DHEA. Because of this, supplemental DHEA can help bring these losses back to life.

Under no circumstances should you even contemplate this type of antiaging product supplement on your own until you discuss it with your doctor.

Don’t be bicep curling in the squat rack

October 25, 2007 By: blogger Category: Modern Fitness General No Comments →

Has this ever happened to you? You hit the gym early in the morning, all pumped up for a great session. It’s leg day and you know what that means, so you put your serious face on and trudge into the gym. Only to find that some 16 year old pipsqueak is standing in the squat rack doing bicep curls!

I’ve got nothing against 16 year old kids in the gym, trying to improve their bodies. I used to be one of them myself, once upon a time. What I do hate is when those kids spend their time in the squat racks, doing bicep curls. They’re called squat racks for a reason people.

And it’s not just the young guys, oh no, this is a far bigger problem. People of all ages think it’s fantastic to use the squat rack to do bicep curls. Is it because you can leave the barbell on the supports so you don’t have to actually bend down to pick the bar up? Probably.

If you’re one of these people, stop doing it. This is what you need to be doing instead. Head into the squat rack and load up a bar with a good weight for you. Get under the bar and then start squatting. I guarantee if you only made this change to your workouts, you would see startling results.

At my local gym, I love it that no one squats. Apart from those idiots who do their bicep curls in it, I pretty much have it all to myself. But when I’m trying to be nice (And that’s not very often) and actually help people out, I tell people squatting is a must. It’s such a powerful exercise, you would literally be a moron to not do it.

The thing that holds people back is pain. I won’t sugar coat it. The squat, when done correctly, takes a lot of effort and a fair bit of discomfort. But it’s this pain and discomfort that forces your body to grow, so unless you can get out of your comfort zone and push through the pain barrier, you’re going to be in trouble.

Washington Martial Arts Schools
Martial Arts are often classified as an exercise that incorporates the different arts of control, manner, kindness, co-ordination of movement principle, respect for others and discipline. It, above all, teaches you how to be patient.

The martial arts of modern times were created to improve the body, foster spiritual growth, enlighten the mind and enforce discipline. If you enroll in a martial arts class, you will quickly learn that this is a way of life. You do not have to be perfect to take a martial arts class, but you should be concerned about self-improvement.

Martial arts are not about seeing what kind of a bully you can be or how you can beat the tar out of someone. Marital arts follow a certain morality and code of ethics. If you happen to be looking for structure and philosophy, then perhaps you may want to consider enrolling in a martial arts class.

Goal-oriented people may consider the martial arts to be challenging because you will progress up the ranks with the different color belts. The ultimate goal is to achieve black belt. In order to progress to the next level certain forms or katas have to be demonstrated. You must ultimately connect the body and the mind through much practice and concentration. It also takes a certain amount of self-discipline to set aside time each day in order to practice the katas.

When you are learning the different forms or katas, your coordination and precision are enhance since you must conform your body to the required positions. The forms create discipline since you are required to memorize specific movements in order to progress up to the next level or attain a different color belt. There are many times in our lives when we wander about aimlessly and do not set goals as to what we should aspire to. However, it is different with martial arts. If you want to strive for objectives in life that may seem to be unattainable and you are looking to take a risk in life, then you should consider signing up for a class in the martial arts.

Many times people, especially women, may take a class in the martial arts so that they can learn the art of self-defense. You will learn that self-defense actually shows you how patient you can be. The martial arts help you to try to avoid conflicts by peacefully talking things out rather than trying to disarm your opponent right away. The martial arts build your confidence level and teach you which options are available to you.

Before actually signing up for a class in martial arts, you should check out every facility that is within your location and perhaps sit in on a class or two. When my son and I enrolled in a martial arts class, this is what we did. We also met with the instructor so that we could see what his main philosophy was and what the goals were for the class. At first, I wanted my son to attain acceptable levels of self-discipline so that it would pervade every aspect of his life, especially school. Believe it or not, when you are self-disciplined every aspect of your schoolwork improves. You are also more goal-oriented in doing your homework because you are more self-disciplined.

I noticed the improvement in my son’s performance in school almost immediately. He also developed a certain air of self-confidence about himself. The martial arts class also helped us develop a strong bond which we have to this very day because we shared something special between just the two of us. My daughters also tried their hand at martial arts, but they did not remain disciplined enough and soon dropped out.

You may also be interested in knowing that Marines are now taking classes in the marital arts. These students do not only learn how to defend themselves using lethal force, but they are taught to condition the spirit, body and the mind so that they are able to cope with any challenges with which they are faced. The Marines are trained that they are mentally in command so that they will not lose control or they will not feel that they have to prove themselves when they are put in a hostile situation.

The training in the martial arts hopefully will give the Marines such self-discipline that they will be able to refrain from getting into bar brawls or exhibiting any other aggressive behavior. This has become quite a chronic problem in civilian areas near military installations.

To sum up then, the martial arts does not teach someone to use their hands as a deadly weapon. It teaches the arts of self-control and self-discipline which is something we can all use in our lives.
